The ESA Spacecraft Materials Kit for elementary school is a useful resource that can be used by pupils to test a range of space-themed materials. Using a set of 9 different materials, they can carry out experiments to find out what properties are required to create a spaceship such as the Orion spacecraft.

Pedagogical objectives

  • Materials are grouped and compared according to their properties: strength, magnetism, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and mass.


Students will improve various skills

  • Plan experiments and understand how to use different variables to answer questions.
  • Precise measurements with scientific equipment
  • Repeat steps if necessary
  • Record and communicate data and results in a scientific manner
  • Present experimental results in oral and written form
