Climate Detectives 2026 awards ceremony

Award-winning projects

As part of the “ESERO Climate Detectives” school project, 7 teams and 20 students presented their environmental study projects on various subjects to a panel of judges:

  • Microplastics in Luxembourg’s waterways
  • The effect of water pollution on algae growth
  • UV radiation and its effect on carbon release from leaf litter
  • How does increasing the dose of UV-B radiation influence the exponential growth rate of Saccharomyces cerevisiae?
  • Global warming, worms and sons
  • Effects of ocean acidification on key marine organisms: Egeria densa and mollusc shells
  • Impact of winter road salting on water salinity

Winning teams

1. Cellf-conscious Biologists from Lycée Athénée de Luxembourg – Microplastics in Luxembourg’s waterways

2. Earth, Worms and Wires by Lycée Vauban – Global warming, worms and yarns

3. 3 Angels for Climate from Lycée Athénée de Luxembourg – Effects of ocean acidification on key marine organisms: Egeria densa and mollusc shells

The three winning students, Nika Obrovac, Karolina V.L. Yazbeck and Saule Staneviciute, will have the opportunity to represent Luxembourg at the Climate Detective Summit at ESRIN at the end of May.

This annual European meeting brings together the best teams conducting scientific research on local climate issues.

Over two days, participants will present their work in poster form, exchange ideas with Earth observation experts and take part in interactive workshops at the heart of ESA’s observation center in Frascati, Italy.
